TESOL Curriculum
This 11 part lecture series and accompanying text “Learning to Teach English” by Jeremy Harmer is designed to give novice teachers an introduction to teaching English as a Second Language. Each lecture focuses on a particular skill area or quality of importance for teachers in today’s communicative language classroom. The lectures are meant to accompany and expand on specific chapters in the text. The lectures are followed by quizzes which are based on information drawn from both the lecture and the text.

L-1 : Teachers
The first lecture explores some of the factors and qualities that can help make a teacher successful in a language classroom.  The lecture concludes with a short discussion of the physical environment of the classroom, materials and classroom equipment.
 
L-2:  Learners
Lecture2 takes look at learners and focuses primarily on how age and proficiency affect how and what is taught.  The differences between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation and their importance in the classroom is also discussed.   
    
 L-3:  Classroom Management  
Lecture 3 focuses on issues of classroom management and how to create ideal conditions for learning to take place.  Some of the topics discussed include giving instructions, using the students’ first language and effective use of different seating arrangements.
 
L-4:  Planning Lesson
The focus of Lecture 4 is lesson planning from developing lesson aims to scripting lessons and finally working through the planning of an actual lesson, including a discussion of procedures and materials.
 
 L-5:  Vocabulary 
The skill area of vocabulary is introduced in Lecture 5.  The necessary skills of dictionary use, pronunciation and activities that focus on helping students know and remember new vocabulary are covered in this lecture.

L-6:  Grammar
Lecture 6 is the first lecture on a specific skill area, grammar.  It gives the new teacher some tips on how to effectively introduce a new grammar point as well as how to balance presentation and practice of the grammar structures.
 
 L-7:  Listening
Lecture 7 discusses building learners’ listening skills.  Suggestions and guidelines for creating useful listening activities are introduced, as well as ways to check student comprehension and an overview of using dictogloss and film in the listening classroom.
 
 L-8:  Speaking
Building student listening skills is the topic in Lecture 8.  Some of the areas discussed include:  the teachers role in a listening classroom as well as methods that can be used to bring an awareness to and focus on both stress and intonation.
 
L-9:  Reading 
Reading is covered in Lecture 9.  Issues around planning reading classes as well as the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic reading and activities to support both are discussed in this lecture.
 
L-10: Writing
Lecture 10 focuses on writing.  It begins with some of the teaching principles that teachers can follow to make students better writers and finishes with an introduction to a sequenced writing activity.
 
L-11: Error Correction & Assessement
The topics of the final lecture are error correction and assessment, the two kinds of feedback teachers often give their students.  Also introduced are other methods teachers can use to gauge student progress as well as some ideas for teaching exam classes. 


Lecture 1 focuses on theories that are beneficial for teachers of young learners.  It looks at different developmental theories, as well as theories that illustrate differences in learning.  The lecture concludes by giving teachers general suggestions of things to incorporate in the classroom.

The second lecture introduces different methods and approaches that can help give teachers structure in their classrooms.  The importance of planning and the different kinds of planning teachers do is also discussed.

YL-TESOL Curriculum
Teaching English to Children (TEC) is a series composed of 11 lectures.  The aim of this series is to give newer teachers an introduction and overview of teaching English to children between the ages of 5-12.  The lectures focus on both theoretical and practical knowledge that teachers can take with them and use in their classrooms.  The lectures expand upon and supplement chapters in the text “Teaching English to Young Learners” by David Nunan.  Quizzes, which follow the lectures, are based on information from the lectures and specific text chapters.

L01-Children as Language Learners
The focus of Lecture 3 is classroom management and the role teachers play in developing effective classroom management strategies.  Some of the topics discussed include creating bonds with students, the physical environment of the classroom, and motivation.

L02-Methods and Approaches for Teaching Children
Lecture 4 covers listening.  The importance of listening in the young learners’ classroom is discussed along with listening principles and suggested activities.  The lecture ends with a discussion of listening for different age groups.

L03-Classrom Management
Speaking skills are discussed in Lecture 5.  Suggestions for creating useful speaking opportunities are introduced, along with different speaking phases children may go through.  Teaching pronunciation and the importance of natural communication is also talked about in this lecture.

L04-Teaching Listening
Lecture 6 introduces the concept of teaching reading to young learners.  The lecture begins by discussing factors that affect a student’s reading ability to different approaches used for teaching reading and concludes with some suggested reading activities.

L05-Teaching Speaking
Lecture 7 looks at the topic of writing.  Skills required for writing as well as challenges involved with writing are discussed.  Tips and approaches teachers can use to teach young learners effective writing skills are also touched upon.

L06-Teaching Reading
Vocabulary is covered in the eighth lecture.  Different activities and stages that learners progress through when learning vocabulary words are talked about in this lecture, along with tips for how to help young children remember new words.

L07-Teaching Writing
Lecture 9 explores the idea of how to help young children understand grammar.  The concept of how to help children learn grammar without directly teaching it is covered.  Suggested activities and grammar concepts for different age groups are some of the topics discussed. 

L08-Teaching Vocabulary
The difference between assessment and evaluation is covered in Lecture 10, along with the introduction of different assessment techniques.  The lecture concludes with suggestions of how to choose the most appropriate assessment for your class situation.

L09-Teaching Grammar
Lecture 11, which is the last lecture, discuses resources and tools that teachers can use in the classroom.  This lecture explores different materials and resources that are valuable in children’s classes, as well as using people such as parents, and other teachers as resources. 

L10-Assessment and Evaluation
The difference between assessment and evaluation is covered in Lecture 10, along with the introduction of different assessment techniques.  The lecture concludes with suggestions of how to choose the most appropriate assessment for your class situation.

L11-Resource and Tools
Lecture 11, which is the last lecture, discuses resources and tools that teachers can use in the classroom.  This lecture explores different materials and resources that are valuable in children’s classes, as well as using people such as parents, and other teachers as resources.
